As GenAI matures, AI-specific cloud platforms are expected to emerge, new ISG reports say

Generative AI is reshaping the cloud computing market and is expected to lead to more AI workload-specific cloud platforms in the future, a new research report from leading global technology research and advisory firm Information Services Group (ISG) (Nasdaq: III) says.

The ISG Buyers Guides for Cloud Platforms, produced by ISG Software Research (formerly Ventana Research), say cloud technology, due to its scale and shared services model, is best suited for the delivery of GenAI-enabled applications at scale and the development of general-purpose foundation models.

The reports note specialty cloud providers will become an important consideration for many enterprise cloud architectures. The emergence of domain-specific models, which can be smaller, less computationally intensive and lower the hallucination risks associated with general-purpose models, suggests a future where cloud platforms may become increasingly specialized, the reports say.

“As GenAI continues to evolve, we can expect to see more AI workload-specific cloud platforms in the future,” said Jeff Orr, director for digital technology, ISG Software Research. “GenAI applications require extensive computational resources, and cloud computing platforms provide the scalability enterprises need to allocate resources dynamically based on the needs of various GenAI workloads. This has led to a reshaping of the cloud computing market, with specialized infrastructures catering to computational giants like large language models (LLMs).”

The reports say that by migrating to the cloud, businesses can streamline operations, reduce costs and accelerate innovation. To meet the efficiency and innovation challenge, enterprises are expected to adopt multiple clouds.

ISG projects that by 2027, over three-quarters of enterprises will operate across multiple public cloud computing environments, necessitating the requirement for a unified data platform to virtualize access for business continuity.

When an enterprise CIO or IT leader is considering a cloud platform, the choice between public, private, hybrid, multi-cloud or industry/sovereign cloud should be driven by the organization’s specific objectives, goals and desired outcomes.

“The conversation in enterprises has shifted from ‘Why cloud?’ to which types of cloud for which workloads,” said Orr. “A diversity in cloud service providers now exists to align with specific industry and business requirements rather than a one-size-fits-all agreement.”

In addition to aligning with strategic objectives and operational needs, it is also important for enterprises to consider factors such as cost, resource availability, technical expertise and the potential need for digital transformation when choosing cloud platforms. A well-chosen cloud strategy, the reports say, can drive innovation, enhance customer experiences and provide a competitive edge in the digital marketplace.

The reports cite other benefits of using a cloud service provider over building on-premises servers. They include low capital outlay, faster time-to-market, agility and optimal cloud delivery models from Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). While on-premises servers will not go away entirely, they must continue to compete effectively with cloud computing as an alternative for many applications and services, the reports say.

The ISG Buyers Guide for Cloud Platforms is designed to provide a holistic view of a software provider’s ability to serve a variety of cloud workloads with a set of cloud platform products. As such the Buyers Guide includes the full breadth of deployment models, services and functionality.

For its 2024 Buyers Guides for Cloud Platforms, ISG assessed software providers across four cloud platform categories – Cloud Computing Platforms, Public Cloud Platforms, Private Cloud Platforms and Hybrid Cloud Platforms – and produced a separate Buyers Guide for each. A total of 13 providers were assessed: Akamai, Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), DigitalOcean, Google, Huawei Cloud, IBM, Leaseweb, Microsoft, Oracle, OVHcloud, Tencent and Vultr.

ISG Software Research designates the top three software providers as Leaders in each category. For the 2024 study, the leading providers in ranked order are:

Cloud Computing Platforms: Microsoft, AWS and Google

Public Cloud Platforms: Microsoft, AWS and Google

Private Cloud Platforms: Microsoft, Google and Oracle

Hybrid Cloud Platforms: Microsoft, AWS and Google

”Cloud computing has become as ubiquitous as the power and water in your home or business, but the software platforms for providing this service are still in an evolutionary transition to be able to interoperate across systems in an enterprise and across multiple enterprises,” says Mark Smith, partner of Software Research at ISG. “This Buyers Guide gives enterprises that need to consolidate and simplify their cloud platforms a better understanding of the current cloud landscape.”

The ISG Buyers Guides for Cloud Platforms are the distillation of more than a year of market and product research efforts. The research is not sponsored nor influenced by software providers and is conducted solely to help enterprises optimize their business and IT software investments.

Visit this webpage to learn more about the Buyers Guides for Cloud Platforms and read executive summaries of each of the four reports. The complete reports, including provider rankings across seven product and customer experience dimensions and detailed research findings on each provider, are available by contacting ISG Software Research.

Transformational AI enterprises are leading the charge, outperforming operational organizations across key business metrics

Vultr, the world’s largest, privately-held cloud computing platform, today released a new industry report, The New Battleground: Unlocking the Power of AI Maturity with Multi-Model AI. The groundbreaking new study reveals a clear correlation between an organization’s AI maturity and its ability to achieve superior business outcomes, outpacing industry peers in revenue growth, market share, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

Commissioned by Vultr and conducted by S&P Global Market Intelligence, the research surveyed over 1,000 US-based enterprise IT and digital transformation decision-makers responsible for their organization’s AI strategy across industries, including healthcare & life sciences, government/public sector, retail, manufacturing, financial services, and more. Of the respondents surveyed, almost three-quarters (72%) are at higher levels of maturity of AI use. The report also includes a qualitative perspective on AI use by enterprises of varying sizes across the United States through in-depth interviews with AI decision-makers and practitioners.

“As organizations worldwide capitalize on strategic investments in AI, we wanted to look at the state of AI maturity,” said Kevin Cochrane, CMO of Vultr’s parent company, Constant. “What we’ve found is that transformational organizations are winning the hearts, minds, and share of wallets while also improving their operating margins. AI maturity is the new competitive weapon, and businesses must invest now to accelerate AI models, training, and scaling in production.”

The Age of Multi-Model AI

The number of models actively used within an organization is a reliable measure of its deployed AI capabilities and overall AI maturity. The data reveals that advanced AI adopters leverage a multitude of models simultaneously as part of a multi-model approach.

On average, the number of distinct AI models currently operational stands at 158 with projections suggesting this number will rise to 176 AI models within the next year. This growth highlights remarkable acceleration in AI adoption across industries, underscored by the 89% of organizations anticipating advanced AI utilization within two years.

AI proficiency and maturity is the new business performance battleground

AI is poised to permeate throughout the enterprise with 80% adoption anticipated across all business functions within 24 months. This will include AI being embedded across all applications and business units.

As AI builds on its new foothold across businesses, there will be an immense impact on enterprise-wide performance. According to the report, those with transformational AI practices reported that they outperformed their peers at higher levels. Specifically, 50% of transformational companies are performing “significantly better” against industry peers than those at operational levels, while a large majority of AI-driven organizations say they improved their 2022/2023 year-over-year performance in customer satisfaction (90%), revenue (91%), cost reduction/margin expansion (88%), risk (87%), marketing (89%), and market share (89%). Meanwhile, nearly half (40-45%) of organizations say AI is having a “major” impact on market share, revenue, customer satisfaction, marketing improvements, and cost and risk reduction.

“AI’s transformative impact is undeniable—it’s devouring industries and is becoming ubiquitous in every facet of business operations. This necessitates a new era of technology, underpinned by a composable stack and platform engineering to effectively scale these innovations,” said Cochrane.

AI spending is expected to outpace IT spend

To fully harness AI’s potential, 88% of the enterprises surveyed intend to increase their AI spend in 2025 with 49% expecting moderate to significant increases. Findings related to key infrastructure, partner, and implementation strategies include:

  • For cloud-native applications, two-thirds of organizations are either custom-building their models or using open-source models to deliver functionality.
  • In 2025, the AI infrastructure stack will be hybrid cloud with 35% of inference taking place on-prem and 38% in the cloud/multi-cloud.
  • Thanks to the skills shortage, 47% of enterprises are leveraging a partner to help them with strategy and implementation, and deployment of AI at scale. Only 15% are leveraging hyperscalers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Open, secure, and compliant are the top attributes of cloud platforms for scaling AI across the organization, geographies, and to the edge.

“For years the hyperscalers have dominated the infrastructure market, relying on scale, resources, and technological expertise, but that is all about to change,” added Cochrane. “Over the next decade, everything will be rebuilt with AI at the core, with organizations integrating the principles of cloud engineering into their operations. As a result, we will see the rise of AI specialists and independents as they empower organizations to do transformative work and gain a competitive edge.”

Challenges to scaling AI across all enterprises

As the race to AI heats up, it will not be without its share of obstacles. Budget limitations, building or obtaining AI algorithms, lack of skilled personnel, and data quality are among the top hurdles organizations say they must resolve to graduate to the next stage of AI maturity.

For those at a transformational level of maturity, governance (30%) becomes much more of an issue, while company culture is the larger issue for those still in the accelerating stage

Tuya Smart (NYSE: TUYA, HKEX: 2391), the global cloud developer service provider, demonstrated how it will use Google’s new Device and Structure APIs in the Smart Home sector. Through new APIs released at the Google I/O 2024, Tuya will further extend the boundaries of the ecosystem and give developers additional opportunities to explore the smart home market.

The worldwide smart home market is currently seeing a robust expansion due to the emergence of increasingly mature smart technologies like cloud computing, AI, and the IoT. Being a pioneer in the field of smart solutions, Tuya is actively driving industry change in the smart home space, and working with many of the world’s top technology companies, including Google, to pursue technological breakthroughs.

Being a reliable long-term partner of Google, Tuya was among the first businesses to connect its developer platform to the Google Assistant. In 2021, Tuya became one of Google’s first authorized solution providers. In 2023, Tuya integrated Google Cloud into its own multi-cloud architecture, offering developers a wider range of cloud tools and more stable services.

Apps are becoming an essential tool for controlling smart devices as smart homes grow more and more common. Tuya has introduced the Tuya Smart App Solution to address the requirements of developers for app construction, and to assist them in resolving issues related to interaction logic design, interface development, and integration, which arise during the development process.

Tuya can offer developers an inclusive service based on its Smart App Solution, covering everything from planning and design, development and testing, app store listing, and operation and maintenance. By offering a one-stop-shop for app solutions, Tuya can help developers cut down on time and R&D expenditures. Additionally, each app has billions of devices and millions of concurrent processing capabilities thanks to Tuya’s worldwide cloud deployment, which can completely fulfill the expectations of the fragmented and individualized market.

Google unveiled a number of new APIs at I/O 2024, such as the Matter Commission API, Device and Structure APIs, Automation APIs, etc., providing new chances for developers worldwide to investigate the smart home market.

Tuya intends to integrate the Device and Structure APIs into Tuya-enabled App considering the superior performance. In the meantime, the Tuya-enabled App will effectively reduce the latency of local management and remote access for smart home devices, giving developers more options and flexibility. The Tuya-enabled App will break down the barriers of the original ecosystem with the support of Google Device and Structure APIs, enabling developers to manage all smart home devices that support Google Home in a one-stop manner within Tuya’s Smart App Solution.

Furthermore, the Solution will provide cross-platform and cross-scenario management, enabling developers to craft more intricate and customized smart home scenarios that will enhance users’ lives and make them feel smarter and more at ease. Using the home cleaning scenario as an example, the Tuya-enabled App, which integrates Google Device and Structure APIs, will turn off the fan, adjust the air conditioning to economy mode, and simultaneously start the sweeping robot to clean the living room when the motion sensor powered by Tuya detects that the user has left the room for five minutes. This increases convenience for people’s family lives by ensuring cleanliness in the house and reducing energy use.

It is noteworthy that Tuya has experimented with Device and Structure APIs in the past, utilizing the Tuya Smart App to create customized smart home scenarios. At the Google I/O 2024, the scenario was completely exhibited this time as well, grabbing the audience’s attention. It displays the good ecosystem compatibility of Tuya-enabled App in addition to the application possibilities of Google Device and Structure APIs. This creative approach can also offer developers everywhere helpful references and direction in the meantime.

In the future, Tuya plans to collaborate with industry leaders like Google to delve further into the domain of smart homes, provide worldwide developers with access to more dependable, secure, and stable cutting-edge technology, and together promote the industry’s advancement.
