Today, Critical Start, a leading provider of Managed Detection and Response (MDR) cybersecurity solutions and pioneer of Managed Cyber Risk Reduction (MCRR), announced the upcoming availability of Critical Start Cyber Risk Register. The Cyber Risk Register is a key component of Critical Start’s Managed Cyber Risk Reduction strategy, allowing organizations to assess, track, reduce, accept, and communicate cyber risk posture and improvements to executives, boards of directors, and auditors.

Critical Start’s Cyber Risk Register is an easy-to-use SaaS offering that enables security leaders to quickly record, track, and manage their organization’s cyber risks in one centralized system. The offering categorizes risks by severity, maps them to security controls, and tracks risk treatment plans and approvals. Risks can be added manually, automatically via any subscribed Critical Start offering, or through data import, giving clear visibility into the current risk posture based on objective evidence.

With cyber risk being an increasing focus for security leaders, executives, boards, insurers and analysts, many organizations currently rely on spreadsheets or manual processes for risk management. This leads to an incomplete picture of enterprise risk, lack of timely metrics, and significant effort spent on tracking and reporting. Critical Start addresses these challenges by providing an efficient, rigorous solution for consolidating risk information, metrics, and reporting.

“Organizations know cyber risk management is critical but struggle with the complexity and effort involved in getting an accurate, timely picture of their risk posture,” said Chris Carlson, Chief Product Officer at Critical Start. “By providing the Cyber Risk Register as a key part of our holistic risk reduction approach, we enable security leaders to easily identify, prioritize, and communicate the actions needed to meet their organization’s risk tolerance and protect against threats.”

Key benefits of the Critical Start Cyber Risk Register include:

  • Clear risk visibility and reporting – executive dashboards and reports provide an up-to-date view of key risk metrics, overall financial impact, trending over time, and ability to drill down into detailed risk information. This supports effective communication with senior executive management, board of directors, auditors, and other stakeholders.
  • Create and manage logical workspaces for business context – create workspaces to manage risks by logical business contexts – internal IT, business applications, third-party vendors, subsidiaries, divisions, any entity – and assign internal and external users to Workspaces with access control and data privacy to collaborate and manage risk. This enables multiple cyber risk use cases across internal, third-party, vendor, and supplier risk management.
  • Efficient risk governance – automated reminders and approval workflows enable a rigorous process for reviewing and deciding treatment for high and critical risks, including accepted risks and future re-evaluation. Time-stamped audit trails document all risk management actions.
  • Secured Document Library – manage all documents, evidence, risk assessment questionnaires, mitigation plans, and other business documents in a centralized secure location governed by access control and data classification. Eliminate document version control by reference the same document across risks and workspaces in the risk register.
  • Time savings for security leaders – consolidating risk data eliminates manual effort and allows quick access to information for reporting, decision-making, budgeting, and compliance needs. Risks can be added manually, automatically via any subscribed Critical Start service, or through data import, giving clear visibility into the current risk posture based on objective evidence.
  • Continuous improvement – over time, metrics and trends identify areas for enhancement, support business cases for investment, and demonstrate the impact of risk reduction efforts. Empowers a proactive, data-driven approach.

The Critical Start Cyber Risk Register will be generally available later this summer. For more information stop by Booth #449 South at the RSA Conference for more details.

Trusted Australian MSP consolidates infrastructure to bring customers into the modern era with S3 object storage

Scalitya global leader in reliable, secure and sustainable data storage software, announced today that Somerville, a leading provider of IT services in Australia, has selected Scality to scale its data storage services in order to meet growing customer demand. The solution combines a petabyte-scale stretched RING object storage architecture across three sites in Sydney and Melbourne running on HPE Apollo 4000 data storage servers from Hewlett Packard Enterprise with immutable data protection utilizing Veeam backup software over an S3 API. This ultra-resilient solution is delivered through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform to provide Somerville scalable performance with pay-per-use flexibility.

Craig Somerville, CEO and founder, Somerville IT Services: “For every MSP holding data on behalf of customers, and even the CIO of an enterprise organization whose responsibility is to ensure that they protect the organization’s data, Scality’s immutability features and resilience features are absolutely critical.”

Since the initial deployment, Somerville has doubled capacity and now plans to add more workloads to expand customer offerings. Scality’s immutable object storage extends Veeam’s enterprise-grade capabilities and helps manage unlimited amounts of data with reduced cybersecurity risks and lower costs. The solution brought immediate results:

  • Greater peace of mind thanks to a modern immutable and ransomware-proof solution
  • Faster customer onboarding with seamless scalability
  • Rapid restore with the ability to recover customer data on 19 servers in a single weekend

For Somerville, Scality RING combined with Veeam and HPE GreenLake has given a substantial boost to their bottom line with a:

  • 30 to 40% increase in revenue
  • 1/3 decrease in operational costs

Craig Somerville, CEO and founder, Somerville IT Services: “We have one engineer who manages the platform day-to-day. He spends more time on improvements and developing the platform than the time the entire team used to spend just keeping the lights on. It’s completely changed the way we manage the data protection practice.”

The HPE GreenLake deployment provides cost-savings, flexibility, and less hassle for the Somerville team. Somerville is not the only customer taking advantage of this modern approach. With five years of successful engagement with HPE GreenLake, Scality continues to see adoption across all sectors (service providers, financial services, government, healthcare, life sciences and more).

Wally MacDermid, vice president of strategic alliances, Scality: “We are excited to see what Somerville has accomplished for their clients and their own IT service offerings. They are a trusted source for bringing Australian customers into the modern era with a sovereign solution that keeps data protected. The continued growth rates around the world with both Veeam and HPE GreenLake keep us focused on our mission to provide customers with ultimate cyber resiliency and unbreakable data protection.”

Company works with JCDC to share valuable security insights and resources with MSP community

N-able, Inc. (NYSE: NABL), a global software company helping IT services providers deliver remote monitoring and management, data protection as-a-service, and security solutions, today announced it is collaborating with the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC) to help create a more secure global ecosystem and work towards helping reduce security risk for MSPs and their customers. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) established JCDC in August 2021 to transform traditional public-private partnerships into real-time private-public operational collaboration. The JCDC 2023 Planning Agenda helps advance cybersecurity and reduce supply chain risk for small and medium critical infrastructure entities through collaboration with remote monitoring and management, managed service providers, and managed security service providers.

“By having the opportunity to collaborate with JCDC, we’re aiming to develop guidelines designated to make sure we’re not only helping our customers manage their security posture with our products, but also helping to create a more secure MSP ecosystem. And that should be critical for all of us,” said Dave MacKinnon, chief security officer at N-able. “To me, it doesn’t matter whether they’re N-able customers or not. It’s important we provide a secure global ecosystem for all MSPs and their customers.”

The collaboration with JCDC gives N-able and its partners access to unique expertise from both JCDC and JCDC members, who work together to gather, analyze, and share information about the latest cybersecurity threats. Working with JCDC also provides information and resources to help MSPs continue the shift from reacting to threats and vulnerabilities, to proactively planning and taking steps to mitigate them in the ever-evolving threat landscape.

CrowdSec, the open-source and collaborative cybersecurity company, today announced the appointment of Courtney Austin, as its new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Andreas Passmann as its new Chief Sales Officer (CSO). Austin and Passmann will be responsible for driving growth and expansion for the company, as well as building its brand and increasing its community presence in the Americas, Europe and across Asia-Pacific.

With more than 20 years of experience in marketing and sales, specifically in the cybersecurity industry, Courtney Austin brings a wealth of expertise to his new role as CMO of CrowdSec. Prior to joining CrowdSec,  Austin was most recently the Senior Director, Global Marketing (APJ and EMEA) at Recorded Future, as well as Senior Director, International Marketing for LexisNexis Risk Solutions. Prior to those roles he held leadership positions at ThreatMetrix, RSA and Software AG.

“The adoption of open source cybersecurity has driven exceptional demand as CTI budgets have become increasingly constrained due to the global economic environment. CrowdSec is proud to support over 65,000 real users across 187 countries, flagging nearly 40 million malicious IPs, making the Internet a much safer place for all,” commented Austin on his appointment.

Andreas Passmann has a proven track record of driving sales and revenue growth, with over 15 years of experience in the cybersecurity and the fintech industry. Before joining CrowdSec, Passmann was head of worldwide sales at SIS ID, and held various senior sales leadership roles in cybersecurity firms including TIBCO and Bertin IT, where he was responsible for developing and putting in place successful international sales strategies.

“We are thrilled to welcome both Courtney and Andreas to these new roles within the CrowdSec team,” said Philippe Humeau, CrowdSec CEO. “Their extensive experience in marketing and sales, coupled with their passion for cybersecurity, make them the perfect candidates to drive growth and expansion for our company. We look forward to the impact they will have on our business.”

The appointment of Austin and Passmann comes at an exciting time for CrowdSec, which has seen significant momentum in recent months. In October 2022, CrowdSec raised $14 million in Series A funding, allowing the company to accelerate its growth and expand its reach. More recently in March of 2023, CrowdSec was one of only 15 European startups selected by Google to join the Google for Startups Growth Academy: Cybersecurity, which will provide the company with mentorship, training, and resources to help scale its business.

CrowdSec will be sponsoring several major international cybersecurity conferences in the coming months, including InfoSec Europe in London, Les Assises on the French Riviera, Black Hat in Las Vegas and IT-SA in Nuremberg, where the company plans to showcase its innovative open-source solutions to the cybersecurity community.

Cyber security threats are on the rise, but managed IT services make small business owners highly confident they can navigate these risks, according to a new survey commissioned by Cox Business.

“The reality is small businesses are the biggest target for cyber security bad actors,” said Jeff Breaux, executive vice president, Cox Business “It is far less expensive to protect against threats than to react after the fact.”

  • Cyber security is a top motivator for businesses investing in managed IT. Forty-two percent of business owners prefer to outsource. Forty-two percent of respondents also dread device viruses, 38% worry about back-up and disaster recovery and 35% fear phishing attacks.
  • Forty-two percent invest in managed IT services for their business. Of that group, 71% will invest more this year than they did in 2022.
  • Cloud services is the most beneficial managed IT offering, beyond cyber security according to business owners. Of those using cloud services today (desktop as a service, migration, monitoring or infrastructure as a service), 84% feel more confident in their company’s network and 86% more confident in data storage.
  • The sample of 500 US-based small business owners showed 74% of those with managed IT services feel “confident” or “extremely confident” in their company’s ability to navigate cyber security because of that support.

“Managed IT solutions are gaining traction among small businesses as they experience the value of cost and time savings first-hand, yet there are still educational opportunities to dispel common misconceptions,” Breaux continued. “Some business owners pushing off managed IT solutions believe their business is too small or the investment is too costly. Even putting cyber security risks aside, with the right partner, managed IT solutions help small businesses unlock ways to improve operational efficiency, clearing the path to accelerate scale and growth.”

Go Deeper: Respondents to the online survey included more than 500 small business owners across the US. For more key findings from the Cox Small Business Pulse on Managed IT Services, visit SMBPulse.pdf (coxblue.com).

Why it Matters: Part of Cox’s portfolio includes Rapidscale, a platform that simplifies IT. We help lean IT teams manage the technology that is vital to running day-to-day operations so they can stay focused on driving growth. We deliver it as-a-Service, with flexible management options, making technology accessible through our industry-leading management portal, putting the power to scale at their fingertips.

The software company plans to grow its channel program and SMB market share with Judy, an accessible, affordable all-in-one cybersecurity solution.

AaDya Security, a software company founded by cybersecurity veteran Raffaele Mautone in March of 2019, announced the close of a $5 million Series A funding round. Led by Mautone as AaDya’s CEO, the new funding will enable the company to fill a key leadership position in finance and expand its sales team to accelerate the growth of its channel program for managed service providers, resellers and referral partners serving small and midsize business customers.

New York-based Left Lane Capital led the funding round with participation from current investors 645 Ventures, Firebrand Ventures, Gaingels and Invest Detroit.

Along with the funding round, AaDya is also announcing its new board of directors which includes a majority of experienced female cybersecurity executives–a rare occurrence in what is typically a male-centric industry. Board members include Julie Cullivan, Didi Dayton, Laura Sillman, Tom Lazay and Raffaele Mautone. Cybersecurity and channel veteran, Lisa Matherly will serve as an advisor for the marketing and channel teams.

“The majority of small business owners lack the resources to protect their businesses against rising cyber security threats as they have been overlooked and underserved by existing offerings. This leaves tens of millions of small business owners vulnerable to phishing, malware, and ransomware attacks that can be catastrophic to operations. We are excited to partner with Raffaele & the AaDya team of industry veterans, who share our mission to empower SMBs against this growing existential risk,” said Laura Sillman, Vice President of Left Lane Capital.

Judy, AaDya Security all-in-one, cybersecurity solution was designed specifically for the needs of small and midsize business customers and the service providers that support them, a market segment that is often overlooked and underserved by established software vendors. The software platform is easy-to-use and manage, without compromising on security. This empowers SMB customers to easily protect their businesses from threats and meet increasingly strict regulations and compliance requirements related to data security and access. It also helps managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs) looking to scale or streamline their security offerings by automating and streamlining security tasks and monitoring.

“The entire idea and mission behind AaDya Security is serving a population that many of the major players within the cybersecurity industry have avoided due to its cumbersome nature and revenue potential,” said Mautone. “We see this differently. With the combination of a vast universe of SMBs who have been underserved and the rise in cybercrime against them, we saw an opportunity to not only create something innovative, but something that could truly help a segment that comprises the majority of economic activity, not just in North America, but across the globe.”

Mautone’s bold focus on the often-overlooked SMB customer is matched by his unique, female-forward approach with the company’s brand. He explains, “When I first sketched out the idea for our all-in-one platform, I knew that leading with fear, technical imagery and industry jargon was not the best way to serve them. I’ve been lucky in my life to be surrounded by strong, smart, successful women who have helped guide my career, so Judy as the heart and brains of our platform and our brand was very intentional.”
